Week at Warp Speed

Friday, February 22nd, 2008 | Health, work | No Comments

warp-speed.jpgMonday, obviously went well. Heels are still a bit tight but are getting more comfortable with wear.

Tuesday; enjoyed another enriching evening at the theatre with GD’s wife and Miranda. Met for eats and drinks at Oba. Started with a VERY tart margarita followed by two glasses of a very nice and easy to drink red.

beardofavon.jpgWalked to PCS in exuberance to see their production of “The Beard of Avon” written by Amy Freed. The entire premise of this play debunks Shakespeare as an author, unmasking the Bard as an awkward, bumbling, fallacious ruse and elected by Edward de Vere to be the spokesperson for De Vere’s scripts of such plays as Antony & Cleopatra, Titus Andronicus and Twelfth Night, along with some sonnets, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day”. Actually, there is the theory that numerous authors could have written these stories, even Queen Elizabeth herself.

I thought it somewhat dissapointing to see Will Shakespeare portrayed with such indignity, but what makes up the real and not in my head Shakespeare could be someone just like this individual in this play and not at all the Shakespeare I conjured in my head at 13 when I started reading Shakespeare.

There is some serious debate around the true authorship of the Shakespearean plays and I know Concordia Unversity has an entire program that revolves around de-bunking Shakespeare as the true author. These are the Oxfordians.

It’s truly an intriquing theory and one of great debate among english literaturists.

Wednesday: walked to violin- feeling a bit more confident in playing it. I can really get my violin to resonate some serious sound and it can actually sound really good when I get the note right. The fingering can be the most challenging while maintaining note quality and bow placement. I do love it.

fitness.jpgThurs: Again, I face the workout debate. I love West Coast, but it isn’t convenient anymore. I tried out 24 hour and wasn’t just completely repelled at all. Funny, I always picture beefy guys on the weights with the Carmen’s and Pamela’s on the ellypticals. I ran on their uber-fancy treadmills, which I think they had like 15 of leaving at least 5 to choose from and at 5:45pm, I was especially pleased.

They have T.V’s scattered throughout so you can get a glimpse of news while on a machine. God bless my ipod. It was a good hour on the treadmill and I enjoyed it very much. Then walked around the weight machines. This was intimidating, there are a ton of new weight machines that I simply don’t get so I did some regular manly push ups on the floor with a mat, stretched and then hit the showers.

Pluses: Big, huge showers, tons of cardio machines to choose from, I will be able to workout during the day here, salt walter lap pool, hot tub, sauna, modern treadmills with pre-programmed workouts ( I can set it to do interval and not have to push any buttons during the hour).

Minuses:I discontinue my support of the local West Coast which helped me through my unemployment stint.

So, I signed up for the year. Paid all at once which lead to what would be a cost of $20 a month. If I signed up for the month to month plan it would be $34 a month, so already I save $14 a month or $168 for the year. I can go to any of the 24 hour Fitness AND so it can be an option for when I am traveling, if there happens to be a 24 close to where the events are.

visitorcenter.jpgFriday: FIELD TRIP - To Tillamook to meet the clients and start planning for the 100th celebration to take place all during 2009. An event a month. SO of COURSE we toured the cheese making facility and of COURSE I got a coupon for a free ice cream so I just HAD to have some! I had the Caramel Toffee Fudge and it was DELICIOUS. My colleagues gave up sweets for lent so it wasn’t fun devouring this delectible dessert myself and having them ogle at my enjoyment, so I think I ate it in like 3 big licks and one big bite. Mmmmmm. I mean, even after a big lunch there at the visitor’s center and I STILL had cheese samples and this wonderful cone of ice cream.

R. just couldn’t beleive I didn’t have the blueberry cheesecake because he knows how bonkers I am for blueberries, but my colleagues thought I should try the caramel toffee fudge.. so that’s what I went with, I totally don’t regret an oz. of it.

wine-bottles.jpgAfter leaving and on our way back to Portland, my supervisor, decided we should stop at the Shaver Vineyards to see if their wine tasting room was open. Luckily for us it was and we got to taste their 2005 and 2002 Pinot. I love that my colleagues love wine as much as I do. I can tell there will be future wine gatherings to look forward to (Yes, I love my job). The 2002 was quite good, so I picked up a bottle. Yum!

I really cannot believe it’s Friday. Ry’s been sick almost all week, so it was wierd heading off to work while he stayed home (talk about reversal). Get better Ry!:)

It’s been a good week, more like a fabulous week and I feel right and wonderful about where I am.

I am blessed.

Our Bodies…our temples….

Friday, September 15th, 2006 | Health | 1 Comment

Are our bodies temples?

As I see it basically, yes, they are also simply shells that hold the person we are within. It is the vessel through which we can communicate, experience the tangible world around us and embellish our senses. To taste, to smell, to feel, touch and especially communicate.

Unfortunately there are some things we can and cannot control in what or how our bodies are. We really are at its mercy. We can take the recommendations from scientific studies and doctors to eat healthy, or eat more berries as it has antioxidants, or eat dark chocolate as it also has antioxidants or drink red wine as it has antioxidants, certainly don’t smoke, don’t drink in excess but some beer can be heart healthy.. who knew……more and more, studies are revealing what causes certain kinds of ailments and what can be prevantative…. now apparently Wasabi is really good for the skin, next to coffee… who knew.

What the real question is, is how much are we in control, really, when we do take the necessary precautions are we really going to live that much longer, have that much more in life. Even with all of the precautions who’s to say what the difference will make? Certain decisions could make a difference for some things are controllable, some are not, alot of it is our choice. Certainly, how we treat our bodies is our choice. What our bodies do or react to the choice or the environment is sometimes not our choice and out of our control.

When something deeper afflicts the body and no topical and nutrional remedy can cure you, then what is to be done.

What I’m getting at is in light of the Race for the Cure this Sunday along with the numerous announcements I have received lately of friends and family being diagnosed with some kind of disease or cancer, such as my cousin being diagnosed with cervical cancer, my friend’s mother being diagnosed with a neurological disorder, my dear friends passing of family due to cancers and even my mother in law, overcoming breast cancer.

That is when I struggle with the phrase, “it was meant to happen” , so why? Why are some people afflicted and not others. Will eating an apple versus a candy bar make that much of a difference? Who knows. Point is, my heart goes out to those who have been through and overcome cancer or any disease that has put their body, their temple, into a state of abnormality and my heart goes out to those who are currently battling the diseases of the body, it is not your choice and who knows if a choice earlier in life would have brought you to a different place than now. These are afflictions that are out of our control. We can support the efforts in research and technology to find cures, to find ways to combat the uncontrollable afflictions. There is also circumstantial afflictions such as….

Why did Steve Irwin have to be hit by a simple stingray and die immediately. Was it just a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or was it “meant to happen”. There are a million examples of these, unfortunately we have no way to support any research or technology to combat that, this is purely sound judgement decided by the individual. Part of this is choice.

To be learned…. Life is short, hold onto the great moments, realize and learn from the hard moments, always challenge yourself and never give up on goals. Our bodies… our temples… are what allow us to experience life, it’s just good to recognize that once in awhile.

Best of wishes to all of those walking this Sunday! I wish I could be with you this year, I will certainly be with you next year.
