(CNN) — A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said Friday.

A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.
The man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies, Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires, told CNN.
The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said.
The dog had apparently carried the baby some 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said.
“She took it like a puppy and rescued it,” Salcedo said. “The doctors told us if she hadn’t done this, he would have died.”
“The dog is a hero to us.”
Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital in La Plata, told CNN that police showed up at the hospital at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday with the baby who doctors say was only a few hours old.
Though the infant had superficial scratches and bruises and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, Melia said.
The next morning, the child’s mother was driven by a neighbor to the hospital and told authorities the 8 pound, 13 ounce infant is hers, Melia said.
The teenager was immediately given psychological treatment and was hospitalized, he said. She has said little about the incident.
The child has been transferred to a children’s hospital in La Plata, 37 miles from Buenos Aires.

Excerpts from a Cat’s Daily Diary:
Day 683 of my captivity:
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the floor.
Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a “good little hunter” I am. The audacity!
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of “allergies.” I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow — but at the top of the stairs.I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded!
The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. The captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe…. for now….
As big as a building but As tender as a mouse

Zeus! Yes, king of his castle and lord over his domain.. although, the house utlimately is owned by my friends and it’s supposed to be the adults that are in charge, but for most animal owners, we all know, it’s really the pet that is in charge.
With the great fortune to be invited to share in the celebration of a dear friend’s engagment, I had the priviledge of sharing great wine, fabulous food and crazy neighborhood stories with friends on Sat. evening. The evening was brilliant, there was brie, which is what made the evening for me, oh, and the tiramisu, oh, and the fabulous wine… well, anyway the evening was just enhanced upon the home bound, Zeus just happy as a clam to see his house full of gorgeous ladies, ready and waiting his command. I had to admit I did submit to his charm and just couldn’t stop petting and hugging and talking to him. Although I think he was far more interested in the left over wrapping paper than the girls, although he preferred sitting with us under the table, versus going upstairs with his papa.
Just as I say, he’s as tender as mouse and cuddly as a bear, and as long as he thinks he’s the king of the castle, he’s as happy as a clam, but don’t try to move him out of his will, it’s just as much as a battle as moving an entire buidling.
Here’s to you Zeus and here’s congratulations and thanks to the wonderful Saturday evening in celebration with my friends M&M (Not the candy)
P.S. Of course I still want a kitty.
Highlight of the week
Friday, September 1st, 2006 | ANIMALS | 6 Comments
Upon looking back over this week and noting its highlights one of them was certainly the opportunity to check on my friend and coworker’s furry friends while she was basking on the beaches and diving with the turtles in Magnificent Maui. Stopping in at noon to give some love, food and relief to these little guys was the best part of my day. Sweet Mr. Louie a shephard with gorgeous markings welcomed me in eagerly with tail in full speed. I would let him outside while I pet the kitty’s , the Hershey and the Levi. Soon they would be purring and rubbing around my ankles with glee in, of course, anticipation for their delectible lunch. I think the usual afternoon meal was a fancy feast of chicken and rice. What more could a kitty ask for.
It was always a joy to give Louie lots of pettings. His back end always pushing against my legs so there is little effort expended on my part to petting him and then to have the kitties rub around my ankles, Levi especially would have to chat and tell me how hungry he was, when in actuality he ate the least of the two, with Hershey always at Levi’s dish still half full after Levi had feasted. Now that Miss. A. is back from the R& R she so deserved, the afternoon visits are a fond memory. I will certainly relish the walk I got to take Mr. Louie on one afternoon. He was a good boy, never barking when I arrived, nor when we took him walking even when other dogs would bark at him from their house. I just took him around the block and when we got closer to his home he seemed to just start to chatter away, not barking just a few doggie grunts and utters. Doggie talk for sure.
Which leads me to a marvelous book I am reading, Marley & Me. A story about an extremely hyper Lab/ retreiver who has some serious separation anxiety issues, but brings just so much laughter, tears, joy and even some frustration to its owners. The journey is now coming to and end and the sweet Marley is now a senoir citizen basically in dog years, I know what is to come next just as in life our animals come and go, but it’s the journey that makes it all worthwhile.
