Breakfast and phone angel fun.

Yesterday morning I met my most missed previous co-workers for breakfast at Cafe Du Berry. Breakfast was pretty good, I wasn’t overly impressed, the service was extremely slow, they didn’t have tea for Aubs, food was good but extremely expensive, so we were a bit late in showing up to our volunteer activity, but it all worked out fine and at least our bellies were full with energy to begin the day.
So, the main point of this breakfast gathering was to celebrate our day of volunteering with the Children’s Cancer Association (CCA) fundraising event at 1051 the buzz, it was the “Valentine’s Day for CCA” radio-thon” and we were volunteering as phone angels. It was our responsibility to take the calls from donors wishing to contribute to CCA.
I volunteered last year and Aubs (previous co-worker) organized it last year for us and she organized it again this year and I HAD to participate again, as it is a fun time.
I believe this is one of CCA’s largest fundraising events of the year. Partnering with 1051 The Buzz, CCA rasied just under $3500,000 this year. It’s fun being a phone angel and I know last year the feeling was a lot more spirited, I cannot remember if it was because we were at the phone-a-thon earlier last year or what, but this year was a little bit of a let down.
I would attribute the disapointment to us being on the last shift, Nelson being off of the air and basically closing the “radio-thon” at 10am. We were in charge of taking the last donors of the event and there weren’t very many. I took 3 total calls during the 3 hour shift that turned into a 1.5 hour shift, but collected $550 for CCA from those calls. Which is something, at least!
The $500 donation was an accumulative dollar amount collected by the Bad Ass Coffee Company this franchise of “Bad Ass” is located in Salem, OR. I had to ask at least 3 times about the name to make sure it was indeed the “Bad Ass” Coffee Company. It was an endearing phone call and the gentleman I spoke to was hilarious, considering I had to have him repeat “Bad Ass”… B-A-D A-S-S “Yes, that’s right”, he says three times over to assure me while laughing at the relatively absurd dubious undertone in my voice.
I had to make sure, so yes, at last I got it right. BAD ASS Coffee Company! The next one was a $50 donation from a very nice young sounding lady.
So hey it wasn’t an incredible amount but it was something and something is all that is needed to make a difference.
It was fun to see my old co-workers and laugh and learn about all that I am not missing at the old grindstone station while celebrating the trials and rewards that unemployment carried for me.
It was a great way to kick off the weekend, and close the week out.
