Holiday…nothing like an excuse for a day off…..

Ah President’s Day. A day I actually got to enjoy the better things in life. It was a glorious day! A day off of work and school! It happened to be the perfect overcast, misty, rainy day to enjoy a nice warm frothy Cappuccino with a sprinkle of cinnamon and cocoa on top. Something I always look forward to on our travels is a good cappuccino. I’ve had the best in Scotland, Germany, Austria and France and so far in Portland at Veritable Quandary , any McMenamins and just recently at Fuel Cafe - 1452 NE Alberta St.. on my fantabulous day off
Unfortunately, the experience at the café was far more disappointing then their cappuccino. Either way, it was a day I could get some things done around the house and then wander along Alberta Street towards Bishops to get my hair done and then decide on the perfect spot at one of the many coffee shops along Alberta to enjoy a splendid cappuccino and well I guess not completely free of homework, I did read more of my next case for our next paper due in a week.
Bishops was so busy there was about an hour and a half wait so I went to stroll more along Alberta. Stopped at a few charming shops and boutiques, here was my journey.
Garnish – Local designer, young, hip, gets materials from LA where a lot of the hot designers un-used fabrics go. She is fabulous and gave me a great idea for a business venture, but I’m not ready to go and start my own business…at least not yet. She’s a delight, if you get a chance, stop in! Her pieces are a bit spendy, but you gotta make a living, her sales are fantastic.
Mabel & Zora – Love this boutique filled with apparel trends from the 40’s to the 70’s and beyond since today’s styles are simply a mish mash of past vogue styles it’s a perfect place to find your style. I’ve bought something everytime I’ve gone in there. The owners are delightful and they play music that spans era’s of time in which their clothes reflect. I love it when they have 40’s jazz over the speakers… makes for a delightful shopping experience.
So, on to enjoy a cozy cappuccino, and Fuel is right next to Mabel and Zora and it started to rain so I stopped in…..and for all of you who were sitting at your big tables and your big comfy chairs and taking up the entire couch at Fuel on Monday.. well you all suck. I went in, scoped the place out and saw a few seats I might be able to shimmy into, but when I had my wonderfully frothed Cappuccino in hand with cocoa sprinkles and asked if you could share just a small diameter of space with me you gave me the…. “do I have to”.. look or you just said, “I am using all this space” reply.
So I was forced to scope the situation outside with the rest of the outcasts.. the smokers. One table was free right by the door, no chairs, only extremely wet chairs still sitting out in the rain. So I grapped a chair put my Cappuccino down, went back inside grabbed napkins and cleaned off the chair meanwhile others warm and cozy inside just looked up and then proceeded to look down again, one taking up a four seater table with laptop! Urgh. Then I cleaned off the chair and hunkered down with my scarf wrapped around me close, at least there wasn’t a ton of wind and I proceeded to enjoy my delicious cappuccino and yes it was quite delicious, despite the cold wisps of raindrops I got in my face every once in awhile. I then took out my case study and decided to read, whilst trying to drink up my cap quickly as it wasn’t going to stay warm for long.
Okay so after I was done licking the bottom of my cup…. I stopped in at the Alberta Co-Op, just to kill some time and found some awesome hot sauce for Ryan, I cannot remember what it was now, but he said it was delicious and a portion of their proceeds goes towards a charitable cause. How cool is that!
Then to Bishops to get hair done, After that, which took 1.5 hours, stopped at Ped Ex quickly where I can find some great locally made jewelry and then Ella’s Boutique, and on to meet Ryan at Binks – happily closed the day with a few pints of the Amnesia ESB – very good in my opinion then home.
Ahhh President’s Day.. a great excuse for a day off and a yummy cappuccino. ![]()
