Wow… what a weekend.. what’s next.. oh no ….more cake…

Talk about 1 step forward, three steps back. Well those three steps were every day of the weekend. Friday, Saturday & Sunday. I have no one to blame but myself and the incredibly delicious food at the places we went. With two birthdays to celebrate and just an evening to finally get together with friends to catch up, the weekend was filled and it certainly filled me in other places too.
Friday Night Gino’s- fantastic Italian restaurant with an impressively extensive wine list. I mean you could get a bottle of Chateau-neuf-du-Pape for $145.00. In my book that IS impressive. Luckily the bottle or actually the two bottles I shared with L (birthday Girl) was consumed enjoyably, sad thing is I didn’t even pay attention to the price, it was that good. Had to share two. Accompanied by a delicious Caesar Salad and a healthy portioned Pasta Puttenesca, filled with a wonderful spicy overtone with tomatoes, capers and calamata olives. Delic. I dared not clean the plate as I knew dessert would have to take the cake. L ordered the Lemon cake which was superb, nice refreshing and light while I go with the rum soaked chocolate cake which was rich with nuts and much heavier but delicious. Of course the night doesn’t close there, after that a nice stop at Horse Brass, where I sipped on an Irish Coffee only thing was the cream was missing, while I’m sure it was saved calories, it still is what brings it all together. So I was less than impressed by the Horse Brass Irish Coffee. Certainly no comparison to the Hubers Spanish Coffee. That by far is an experience in it of itself.
Saturday - while I did go for a nice run approximately 3—4 miles, still I don’t think I burned enough to break even between Friday and this evening’s feast at Gustav’s.
Indulged in a bowl of Fondue, shared with friends and I had salad and for main a stuffed Portobello mushroom with artichoke and tomatoes, rich and scrumptious. All of it quite delicious, washed down by a nice pint of Spaten Munich. No dessert necessary this evening, as the 2nd stop was our favorite of places, Moon & Sixpence where even M enjoyed a Black & Tan with me. M never drinks beer.. I’m so proud! :)
Sunday- it was still birthday weekend and R’s littlest bro turned the big 22. The venue was completely opposite of what the weekend experience has been so far as his place of choice was of all places a sports bar, with huge TV’s and the one in the middle of the place had about three screens and TV’s at every ceiling corner in the bar. The people were friendly, the food was good, so no complaint here. I had, in an effort to be good, taco salad. Of course I did get the giant size with the uber delicious fried shell, couldn’t resist and well at least I just had bites of the birthday boy’s dessert, bread pudding.. with whiskey sauce.. and it was absolutely delicious. Go figure at a sports bar.
So the weekend more than did me in and I’m paying for it now, but as I said previously I do Love food and we’ve got some really good food in Portland, even at a sports pub in suburbia. Luckily I can manage to maintain discipline during the week, whilst fantasizing about what I’ll have this coming weekend. In fact we’ll be going to another birthday gathering this weekend, but this will be more like “fun with Curious George” than Irish Coffee’s, fondue and black & tan’s as it’s for a soon to be 1 year old. Let there be cake!
