Relaxing with the BBC on OPB….

Why do weekends fly by so incredibly quickly. Most likely because the time available to do what you choose is so valued and wonderful that it just doesn’t last as long as we want. So I treasure the time when I can sit relax and relish in accomplishing yet another paper for school, a four mile walk and then enjoy a glass of wine and laugh along with those BBC heroes and heroines of comedy.
Saturdays on OPB are filled with fun and adventures provided by Globe trekker. The one on Saturday was especially meaningful as Ian Wright one of my favorite Globe Trekker’s hosted it and he traveled all around the southern part of England and ended in Wales. Re visiting places in my head while he showed us even more of what there is to see there such as Dover Castle and Portsmouth. Up to Cornwall while R. salivated over the massive Cornish pasty baked by locals.
While this same evening they featured Rick Steve’s adventures in Salzburg. Again a nice reminisce of the city, however, accompanied by the ever annoying commentary provided by the most annoying travel host ever, that is in my book anyway. Sure it’s somewhat educational and you get to see some cool adventures, it’s completely unfair that he can be so successful. Ah well. I need to figure out what to call my own travel Show.. Oh I know. “Kelly’s Travels”… I like it! Okay now who would buy stock in it???
Anyway, back to my Saturday withthe BBC, the first show is As Time Goes By. It is simply charming, with Judy Dench, it’s one that will make you always laugh and appreciate the nuances of the british vernacular, such as when anyone has a cramp in their leg they say, “I’ve got cramp” or if anyone has to go to the hospital they say, we best get “to hospital”. Really very charming.
Followed by My Hero, Based on an Irish super hero that’s pretty much on earth to fight crime and he is as naive and dense as a doornail but it’s his complete innocence and sweet naivity that really encompasses the humor of this show.
Then the story of the Buckets which is really pronounced as “Bouquet” in Keeping up Appearances. Hyacinth will do anything outshine everyone to reflect she is of higher class. Poor Richard, he always has to play the ” walk on me” husband who gets the brunt of her over acheiveness.
At last to wrap up the evening is My Family. Reflecting typical family squabbles and adventures, with the oldest still living at home and the father a dentist just trying to keep his family together at the willfullness of the mum. I haven’t seen a lot of these, I think these just started appearing on the BBC. I like the mum as she was the teacher in Harry Potter that taught the kids how to fly on their broomsticks. I cannot remember her name right now, and the oldest dead beat son was on Love Actually as Collin, who goes to the states to find a women.
He cracks me up.
So enriched with fun British adventures and a kitty in my lap with a glass of wine in reach, I would say it’s a Saturday evening of great reward.
Just the evening doesn’t quite last as long as I would like it.
I still wonder about BBC America on the Dish Network, although then I may never want to leave home.
